Anyone have any insight into any of the Chicago programs? Relative competitveness, reputation, malignancy, opinions, etc? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I would say that the programs are thought of in 3 tiers:

1) Northwestern, Rush, U. Chicago

2) UIC

3) Loyola

I don't know about UC being up there....I've heard a lot of negative things about the program, unless you're interested in good critical care training.

Anybody else? Info regarding quality of life, program strengths and weaknesses, other opinions would be greatly appreciated...thanks to those who have already responded.

hey midwest folks:

does anyone know how long it takes to drive from madison to chicago? mapquest says 2.5hrs.? i cant afford 2 flights, madison interview ends at 3:30ish and i have Rush pm dinner at 6:30ish. what do yo uthink? tight? worse to be late at dinner or just telll them you cant make it at all?

also, consensus is that Rush > NWU in terms of Neuro yes? (i.e. if i had to chose one), thats kinda what ive been hearing, but i only think ill have time to interview at one of them.

muc h thanks

I think it is difficult to compare the Chicago programs. Rush was at one time an excellent program, but has lost some if its top faculty recently. NWU has gotten great faculty recently. Univ of Chicago has a renown critical care section now. On top of all this, UIC is developing a strong stroke/critical care section as well. I think these programs are essentially comparable and what location you choose to interview at or rank should ideally be based on either your preference is for academics (UofC and NWU) or for clinical (Rush) training and on subspecialty interests (NWU--stroke and dementia, Rush--movement disorders, and UofC--critical care, MS, and epilepsy). It is dangerous to simply say that one program is better than the other.

2.5 hrs is about right, except you'll probably run into some traffic. I think you'd be safe to drive if you have some flexibility to show up to the dinner late. It will probably take you just over 3 hours including traffic. Unfortunately, you'll be hitting rush hour and the reverse commute from the NW suburbs can be nasty.

You could also take a metra train (http://www.metrarail.com/) into Chicago from one of the suburbs to avoid traffic, but I'm not sure if it would be that much faster.

Hope this helps!
