Could anyone help me out on the psych programs in Chicago? Which programs are "best"? I am M3, and recently considering psych as a specialty due to strong interest in addictions. Any feedback would be great. Thanks

Northwestern and UIC both have Addiction Psychiatry fellowship programs, so I guess I'd start there. I've heard OK things about Rush as well. Good luck!

I just interviewed at UIC today. The residents seem pretty happy. The workload is tolerable. They have a lot of research going on, they rank about #18 in the country for amount of research dollars recieved for US psych programs. They have a lot of residents too, 10-12 per year.

I recently interviewed at Lutheran General, which is pretty much the opposite of UIC. They are a small program with about 3 residents per year. There is very little research there. That being said the residents place well, there is no shortage of jobs for psychiatrists. The residents are, for the most part, ecstatically happy with their program. The workload is VERY tolerable. They seem to be treated with respect and dignity by the faculty.

Both are great programs, just in different ways. From what I have heard, and this is total hearsay, Northwestern is a very strong program. All the Chicago and Indiana people I have met thought very highly of the program. From what I have heard the workload is significantly higher there than at the other programs. Don't know how accurate that is, hopefully someone can give you some firsthand info about this and other schools. Feel free to PM me if you want to ask any other questions.

Northwestern is in the best part of city but they also have a hefty workload. When I was there, residents described how they're typically up for most of their call nights admitting patients. They've got a densely-populated catchment area and they are the Level 1 Trauma Center for downtown Chicago.

The training seemed solid but they had to work pretty hard.

I just interviewed at University of Chicago today. They have gone through turmoil in the past few years, having lost a lot of their child psych attendings. They re-opened up their child fellowship and have 2 new fellows. Research is on the upper end of importance in this program. They have a new residency director who I was impressed with that seems to be taking this program in a good direction. Call during first year psych months is q9.
