Hi Everyone! I was just wondering if anyone knows much about the IM residency programs at Rosalind Franklin University or UIC-Urbana Champaign? Your feedback would be much appreciated! Thanks! 🙂

Hello,

Though I think the RFUHS medical school is underrated, I think the IM program is not for everyone. As a med student, I did a sub-I at Mt Sinai (Chicago) and was able to witness/experience the program a bit. Things may have changed from 4 yrs ago, but here are some things that I observed back then:
PROs:
1)Mt Sinai offers diverse pathology: pts are typically underserved and minorities. You have the chance to see fresh cases - similar to Cook County.
2)A number of the faculty members are dedicated to teaching: those who work at Sinai are making a sacrifice to work in an institution who's mission is to help the underserved. They tend to have a passion for the field.
3)The residents were collegial and intelligent.
4)You get to work with medical students
CONs:
1)Your time is split between Mt Sinai (Chicago - by Cook County/Stroger) and the North Chicago VA (way up north -20 min south of the Wisconsin border). On some days, you may be on service at one site and then need to haul it over to the other site for your clinic...ugghh
2)The program is predominantly comprised of FMGs - and even though it is a totally wrong way of thinking...this decreases the "prestige-factor" of the program. I don't think the fellowship match is that great - but I'm not certain.
3)Mt Sinai is a brutal place - you will learn but will work hard. Ancillary services are minimal, scut can be high, the culture of the institution can be jaded, and the patient population can be difficult.
4)The VA is a dying institution (or, at least, was when I was a student)

Anyways, just my 2 cents - take it or leave it 🙂
If things have changed in the last few years - I'd love to hear about it!

Good Luck!

My opinion only:

Pick UIC over RFUMS as it is a Univ program, better matching for fellowship, and better ancillary staff.

If you have the option of other Chicago programs like RUSH, Loyola, pick these as better national recognition. Lutheran General is a good option, and I think if more affiliated with RFUMS over Mt. Sinai, and if this is the case, maybe RFUMS isn't that bad of a choice. And of course if you received interviews at NW or Univ of Chicago, there is no question that you should rank these #1

UIC in Chicago is different than UIC in Urbana/Champaign. Rosalind Franklin is Chicago Medical School (Mt. Sinai is there hospital, right?), and thus a university program.

UIC chicago is differnt from UIC-champaign, but I believe they still are considered a univ program. RFUMS is Chicago Med, but Mt. Sinai, Lutheran, Cook County, Masonic and VA are a couple of hospitals that their Med students rotate at. The residents rotate at Sinai, Cook and VA, but I think they were in the talks about switching over to Lutheran. Since the hospital is separate from the school by about 35 miles, I don't know if it is considered a univ program...but check on this.
