Hello,
Though I think the RFUHS medical school is underrated, I think the IM program is not for everyone. As a med student, I did a sub-I at Mt Sinai (Chicago) and was able to witness/experience the program a bit. Things may have changed from 4 yrs ago, but here are some things that I observed back then:
PROs:
1)Mt Sinai offers diverse pathology: pts are typically underserved and minorities. You have the chance to see fresh cases - similar to Cook County.
2)A number of the faculty members are dedicated to teaching: those who work at Sinai are making a sacrifice to work in an institution who's mission is to help the underserved. They tend to have a passion for the field.
3)The residents were collegial and intelligent.
4)You get to work with medical students
CONs:
1)Your time is split between Mt Sinai (Chicago - by Cook County/Stroger) and the North Chicago VA (way up north -20 min south of the Wisconsin border). On some days, you may be on service at one site and then need to haul it over to the other site for your clinic...ugghh
2)The program is predominantly comprised of FMGs - and even though it is a totally wrong way of thinking...this decreases the "prestige-factor" of the program. I don't think the fellowship match is that great - but I'm not certain.
3)Mt Sinai is a brutal place - you will learn but will work hard. Ancillary services are minimal, scut can be high, the culture of the institution can be jaded, and the patient population can be difficult.
4)The VA is a dying institution (or, at least, was when I was a student)
Anyways, just my 2 cents - take it or leave it 🙂
If things have changed in the last few years - I'd love to hear about it!
Good Luck!
