Which Child & Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship programs have minimal (e.g., limited phone call / no need to come in-person overnight) to no call?

Have been doing a lot of researching of program websites, but unfortunately most websites do not comment on call schedule. It is my understanding that home call can be potentially exhausting if it's a busy unit with no other cross-coverage (e.g., free-standing children's hospital that is not covered by adult psychiatry residents).

Edited to incorporate some of the helpful input in this thread. Putting together list of potential programs to apply to, appreciate the responses so far!

Programs are going to have an inpatient component to them and this will almost certainly have a call component, but can vary wildly from very limited phone call to going in to cover admissions/consults/ED etc. There are many many programs that have a limited phone call that is not remotely onerous and this is a pretty easy topic to discuss with a PD or current fellows. I think it's a good idea to take some phone call to have an idea how you would manage these things as an attending and this can certainly be done while maintaining a good lifestyle.

Duke has call - but it's basically 6-7 weekends of covering the inpatient CL service (no overnight work at all, and it's rare on weekends you're working more than 4-5 hours/day). You also get a post-call day off that you can use within 1-2 weeks of the call weekend, so it works out to an "extra" week of vacation. Not sure how things will change in the future but this is what it has been in recent years.

Phone call of the kind that you describe certainly sounds very do-able! Which CAP programs have phone call like this?

I think Kaiser in socal used to not have call, but checking their website now they advertise their call as "light", lol.

Pine Rest Christian in Michigan advertised themselves as no call (for residency and fellowship) a couple of years back. Their reputation is legendary in terms of how cush they are lol, although I have not met any graduates personally to verify those claims...

Tufts in Boston has call on the schedule, but I remember on my interview trail one of the chiefs bragged about setting foot in hospital for the first time 1.5 years into their 2 year fellowship. I made a note of that and ranked them VERY highly.

Many many do, all but one in the city I trained in where like this. It's not easy to put together a list because it's quite common. Anything attached to a children's hospital is going to be a great learning experience but is certainly at risk to have more intense call.

UCSF has q6week home call for one week at a time (including the weekend) but it's only covering the consult service and PHP program and usually just by phone. All ED evaluations are done by a crisis team and the inpatient unit is covered by the attending. Might need to come in over the weekend if there are catatonic or delirium cases.

UCLA has only short call until 10pm. Cover the inpatient child unit, ED, and consults. The adult psych results cover overnight after that. No weekend call.

Stanford has q9d home call overnight and 6 full weekend call. Cover ED and consult service but not the inpatient units. Might need to come in over the weekend if there are catatonic or delirium cases.

Hi! I'm a current Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellow at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, NC. Our call is 6-7 weekends throughout the year of rounding on the inpatient child, adolescent, and eating disorder unit from 8am-12pm on Saturday/Sunday. We have no overnight call! It's very manageable. We have a big program with 6 fellows per class, so it's easy to be able to switch calls or find coverage because you have lots of colleagues. Feel free to DM me if any questions!
