China elective

I will be spending a month in China this October (Shanghai, Beijing, Kaifeng, Huan'an). Any suggestions (what to bring, how to prepare, site seeing, etc)?

Should I bring cash/travler's checks? Will I be able to use credit card (visa) at most places?

Hello, ive did some recent travels in china. You should be able to use CC's at most places , usually surchage will be added per transaction. Be familiar with the exchange rates for RMB <-> USD so wont get screwed as much. Bring some cash to exchange either at the airport or local bank. At the airport, their exchange rate screws ppl over tho. site-seeing wise, beijing has many places. Shanghai has the best night life. Huanan i just know they have MaoZedong museum and they have great hospitals there.
in the past I would bring a GSM phone and purchase a SimCard from convenient stores and get a local number.

oh no, i brought my own gsm phone (they have gsm network there so you dont have to purchase a new phone there), like a t-mobile or cingular phone. im not sure how much the simcard costs, since you can add as many minutes you want onto the card..

If you bring your own GSM phone, make sure that it is unlocked or else you won't be able to use it with a sim card that is from a different carrier.

I'm interested, too. I majored in Chinese in college but haven't used it much since then, and I'd like to go spend some time in China (or Taiwan or Singapore, anywhere that's predominantly Chinese), probably as a 4th year elective of some sort. How easy is it to get a rotation in China? I'm going to guess, not very, since they have much more limited medical resources so far. But just to go and hang out at a hospital and come back and write a paper on it or something--is this very hard to do?
