Why is chloride ion a lewis base? I always thought that lewis bases give up electrons rt. Should we think of this interms of conjugate acid and base, since chlorine is a acid and chloride ion is its conjugate base?

lewis bases can donate a pair of electrons. a chloride ion has 8 valence electrons, so it can donate a pair to form a bond with another atom.
