i know this may seem silly,
but is it appropriate to give chocolate to professors/dentist who wrote my LORs? or is there a better thank-you gesture?

haven't asked for an LOR yet but I gave chocolate after I stopped shadowing....he really appreciated it. I think it's a good idea.

What kind of chocolates are you getting them? I've been searching for a thank you gift for my LOR writers as well 😛

A small gift (like chocolates) is probably a good idea. They'll please just about anything. If you know more about them, you could get more personal. I bought a bottle of wine that I knew the dentist likes, but that was before the LOR was requested. It was more of a "thank you for helping me decide to go to dental school" gift.

As for professors, I just sent thank you emails and went to personally thank them.

I know most of my LOR writers well enough that a nicely constructed thank you letter would be proper.

For those that I don't know as well, I still think a nice thank you letter would be appropriate.

I'm actually working on my thank you notes right now

It's not a bad idea, especially when you are waiting for their LOR for a long time, and now you have a perfect excuse to remind them to get on with it, haha.

Btw, I used to give Polish vodka to my professors.

I gave my letter writers nice stainless steel Starbucks travel mugs. Profs loveee coffee!!

thanks for all the ideas. i bought a lot of lindt chocolate i think im going to give the dentist. and maybe a few for the professors. plus thank you cards for all of them ofcourse.

Chocolates for the lady dentist or a bottle of good wine to a male dentist and flowers for the front desk, everyone will be happy!

Thats so nice of you! I think cholocate and a card is fine! Get some Godiva, Ghiradelli, Lindt, or Ferrero. All this talk of chocolate is making me hungry! 🙂 yummy

Reading all of these responses, I'm beginning to think that just a nicely written thank you card is not enough! 😱

I gave organic strawberries picked from a local farm to the professors that helped me out. They were in season this time of year and absolutely delicious. They went over well. Also, at the dental office I shadowed at I baked cookies (from scratch) for the whole staff, they loved them.

I think anything that has some thought behind it and shows that you're grateful is perfect!
