Do you have any thoughts about which pocket book I should carry around as an intern on the neurology service?

I will be a psychiatry intern in July and am starting off the year with my 2 months of neurology.

Any advice would be great (and ease my nerves!).

I'm leaning towards the Mass General pocket guide (based on what I've read on SDN and Amazon).

This is a "controversial" topic - the Neurologists at my program area ll quite opinionated about it. To solve that, I bought 3 before starting residency. And the verdict? I use none of them, and always go to the trusty (frequently updated) internet with questions -- I did the same thing during my medicine intern year as well ...
Also, I would check to see if your program has its own manual ... that will likely be more useful than any other reference.
I will also say one reason that I don't want to carry a book is that I carry so much other gear as a Neurologist ... At first I tried to make a go of it putting everything in a white coat, but my shoulders and neck were killing me, and I was always missing something, so I broke down and bought a bag (I would say at least 2/3 of our residents carry a bag of some sort).
Have fun on your Neurology rotations!!

Thank you for the thoughtful response.🙂

I, too, have had the experience of buying books and not using them but I think I'm going to need something, even if it's just as a (heavy) security blanket. I'm not looking forward to weighing my white coat down again.

That's a really good idea to see if the program has a manual. I will email and ask.

Thanks!
