So I'm basically at a crossroads and have to decide (very soon.. by Monday) how I want to spend my gap year. Thus far I have 4 interviews and hoping to matriculate in fall 2011.

Option 1: Pursue a 1 year masters program (Sep - July) in Nutrition.

Pros: Very interested in nutrition
Although probably won't help out for getting into medschool my mom (who is a physician) says it could be nice to have when applying for residencies and make me stand out a bit.
Get some research under my belt
Get to spend lots of time in NYC.

Cons: $$$ (Although parents are actually encouraging me towards this route and don't mind footing the bill)
Waking up early to commute will suck
Not sure its the best idea to jump from this straight into med school with only a couple weeks off (was hoping to travel, spend time with friends, etc)

Option 2: This summer I've been working as a research assistant at a hospital and my boss recently offered me a position for the year.

Pros: Earn money
Very flexible schedule (I basically make my own hours) which would be great for interviews
Get some clinical research under my belt and perhaps a publication
Great exposure to hospital setting, lots of indirect shadowing

Cons: Work can get repetitive
???

Both options result in additional research experience which will will be a positive when you apply for residency. Option 1 would be negatively impacted by your need to travel/take time off for interviews. Option 2 allows you to earn money and is flexible. More time with a PI results in a better LOR. Some time away from academia will help you to recharge your batteries.

I'd pick #2.

I would definitely choose option #2.

Choose option #1, and then give me your research job. I am working at Starbucks during my gap year 🙂 Stupid humanities degree.....

haha, I got really lucky with this gig to be honest. Just a right place right time kinda thing.

Thanks for the advice, SDN. Was definitely leaning towards this route as it makes the most sense.

wow i vote for #2 as well. U'll earn money, u'll be happier, and i think it'll be better for applying to med school. clinical research in a hospital setting and the possibility of a publication in the future. as a premed, i would enjoy that more than taking courses in nutrition
