First of all, super grateful to have multiple acceptances. I was going to wait for FA info, but I am kinda bored atm so wanted to hear some thoughts about these schools. I will update the post with FA later if needed. Just a bit of info about myself to help with the suggestions:
- Very OOS for all these schools so distance does not matter lol
- Most interested in pediatrics but also 1) radiology 2) anesthesiology 3) ophthalmology. Also want to do something with global health/health policy
- Ruled out FM and most likely IM because I want nothing to do with treating adult chronic diseases
- From low-income family, so FA will matter a lot. Unfortunately, none of my current acceptances are that great with FA.
- I might be interested in matching to the east coast bc I haven't lived there before, but I am fine with cities like Chicago, Atlanta, Nashville, or west coast.
USF CORE (70-80K COA/year)
Pros
- Brand new building with sweet amenities for med students
- Tampa seems very fun, going to school next to the beach can't be that bad
- Skyrocketing rankings and funding, which is supported by good clinical sites not that far from each other
- Fantastic global health concentration with many international connections, especially Asia
Cons
- OOS tuition all 4 years along with the highest COL
- Not the biggest fan of Florida in general
- No real campus
- High SOAP last year is sus, but I am not interested in derm/ortho/plastics
- Their financial aid was a mess as of last year (no real package until you matriculate, and you have to fill out a long application)
- Basically graded
SLU (80K COA)
Pros
- Spent 4 years in StL, feels like home and know I would like it here
- They offer 10-20K need-based tuition
- Located in one of the most segregated regions in the US, so lots of focus on social justice
- Surprisingly very good match list
- P/F
Cons
- Nothing really stood out about the school
- Overshadowed by WashU
Cincinnati (60-70K COA)
Pros
- Cincinnati Children's! And huge hospital system all close together
- More traditional medical school campus with undergrad close by
- Can get IS tuition all 4 years
- Probably about as established as you can get (200+ years)
- I like the midwest vibe
Cons
- Not as diverse as they claim to be. But this is a state school so it's not that bad considering.
- Very few scholarships if any
- They are usually internally ranked (currently full P/F due to covid, may continue but who knows)
Rochester (WL) (80K)
Pros
- Only school on here that is "prestigious"
- Good need-based aid from their info session, up to full tuition possibly
- Excellent research, global, local opportunities with their pathway program
- Small class but I felt like I would fit in with the students (very diverse)
- East coast is cool (although Rochester is isolated as heck)
- Likely sending a LOI here next month
Cons
- Awfully cold weather? IDK
- They didn't accept me 🙁
So yeah, fingers crossed for UR. However, if I don't get in there, what should I pick? I am leaning Cincinnati (pending FA info) but just wanted to hear some thoughts! Thank you in advance
