I was wondering if any Air Force physicians could answer a few questions about Civilian Sponsored residencies?

Since the Air Force is paying your salary, do residency programs take almost anyone who applies because it's a free body for them (i.e. if a residency program normally only takes 1 person per year, they would be jumping at the chance to take you as a 2nd person because they don't have to pay you)? Or do most students not even know that they're going to be civilian sponsored until after the match? Just wondering if I can apply to a residency and sell myself by saying "If you take me, it will cost you nothing (monetarily)"?

Thanks for any help you can provide!!!

Anybody?......No. If they have standards (and they should) you will need to meet the minimum. Then they are likely to say yes.

Thanks for your reply,

I'm a D.O. student and if I apply to very competitive M.D. residencies, they're probably just gonna toss my application in the trash unless I have something to offer. I've seen statistics that show almost no D.O.s get very competitive M.D. residencies except for military residencies (for the most part). What I'm hoping is that being in the Air Force and having them pay my salary so the hospital doesn't have to cover it, will change things. I plan of having great scores on boards, gunning for that 90th percentile that seems to get people into the toughest of residencies just so I won't have any doors closed due to test scores.

What I'm hoping to do is rotate where I want to do my residency and talk with them about the Air Force paying my salary (civilian sponsorship) so that they keep me on their radar. It may be that they don't even know about this? But can you confirm this, that the military will pay your salary while doing a civilian sponsored residency? Is there any drawback for the hospital (do they have to pay anything)?

Thanks again!
