Hi all! I’ve been trying to find these answers online but I seem to get a different answer everywhere. I was hoping maybe someone has been in my same boat and can help me answer this better!
I’m currently a resident of New York but I’m planning on moving down to Florida around July. I want to apply to vet schools this cycle. Since apps aren’t due until September and I’ll be living in Florida for more than a year by the time of matriculation if I was to get in, can I apply as an in state student at UF for this cycle? I’m 24 years old and will be having a full time job. I won’t be dependent on my parents income. I saw somewhere too that being a dependent could be a factor. Thank you in advance for any insight!!

Best bet is to contact the school themselves. They are the ones who will be determining residency status, not us. We can make best guesses, but you really need it in writing from the school themselves.

true, i was just hoping maybe someone’s been in my position before to see how it went for them! thank you

A lot of people probably have just based on statistical probability. But residency status is based on university policy, which is further based on residency laws of the particular state. That shenanigans can change year over year and so someone from last year could very well have outdated information that no longer applies. Checking with the university (not the veterinary school) is the best way to set yourself up for success

okay thank you so much!!

Definitely contact schools directly to see what their policy will be. One of my classmates moved from NC to VA the year she was applying for vet school. Neither state was willing to consider her an in-state student. VA-MD said she hadn't lived in VA long enough and NC said since she didn't live there anymore she was no longer in-state. (Extra rude since she had lived in Virginia the 4 years prior for undergrad and is originally from Maryland. She only spent 1 year in NC for work after graduating undergrad.)

Oh my gosh that’s so unfortunate!! I will definitely double check with the school, thank you so much!
