I know this is probably the wrong place to ask, but does anyone have experience being a member of a class action suit? I have received a letter saying I worked at X, which is being sued, and would like to strike a settlement. If I sign some paper saying that I want to be part of that settlement, they will pay me some money and life will go on. I can also opt out and not be any part of it. The allegations in the suit apply to me, so if I signed it I would deserve the money, but how does stuff like this look? Does it come up in background checks? Should I just opt out and not worry about it?

First, by way of disclaimer, I'm not a lawyer, so if you really feel like you need legal advice, you should consult an expert. But I did mock trial in college and testified at nationals...

A class action is a civil suit, so it doesn't apply to a criminal background check. So, it has no bearing either way for medical school. And actually, over the course of your life, the average American is eligible (usually as a plaintiff) to be involved in like six class action lawsuits that they don't know about. The difference is, someone actually got paperwork to you.

I don't know if this is the same thing, but I own a few shares of Target stock, and every once and a while I will receive a package saying "so and so has sued Target for this and that, and you're entitled to $7.00."

I also received a few dollars as a result of the Microsoft lawsuit awhile back.

I've been involved in a handful of class action lawsuits over the years from a wide variety of sources. You're not going to get rich, but you might gain 5-10 bucks out of it.
