Hello all,

I am a first year student at UNC Chapel Hill SOM. We are currently having a discussion of the worth/advisability of recording class lectures and making them available online. I know that there are other medical schools are doing this, and I was wondering if I could get your input. First, I would like to know of any schools that are implementing technology in this way. Second, I would like to know how the students feel about it: Is it helpful? Does it decrease the usefulness of class? Does it decrease class attendance in a significant way?

Thank you for your help!

So at my school all lectures are recorded and available online soon after the lectures are completed on any given day.

I think they are a great resource. I do not think it affects attendance to lecture in a signficiant way - the % of people who come to class and the % of people who don't come to class would probably be about the same with or without videos at my school. Basically I will go to most lectures but if there's an upcoming block of notes that are "just read and know the material" then I'll skip lecture and maybe watch parts of a video for clarification.

That's the great thing with the videos - you can fast forward through people asking dumb questions that quickly add up to many minutes of wasteful time and focus on the important points.

Good luck.
