I was wondering whether anybody knew if Class Rank or MCAT score was a better estimator for a USML Step 1 score? Which one is more important? I am asking b/c my MCAT score was good, but I am not studying like my classmates and am below average in class rank. I am purposely doing this because I want to have a life through medical school. So, will my "slacking" have a major effect on my USMLE Step 1? Thanks for any feedback.

I believe there is a very clear (inverse) correlation b/w "slacking" and Step 1 scores. You should be much more concerned with this correlation than any other.

I think there's no correlation between any of them. I slacked and got very good step I and II scores. It's entirely individual.

Congrats on your scores 👍 , but this is antecdotal evidence. Would you not agree that good study habits (esp. 2nd year) have a strong correlation with higher step scores?

I like your guys' feedback. And, it's not that I am not learning a lot, but I am hoping that reasonable study habits through 1st and 2nd year with really good preparation before the STEP 1 will do it for me. What do you think of this plan? I am obviously not trying to get into top residencies, but I would like to go into a specialty residency in something like Medical Oncology.

Dude it is seriously sad that you are on SDN asking about correlations between class rank and USMLE. No one can predict your scores except you. Study hard and do your best and that's it. DAMN!

"DUDE, it is seriously sad that you waste your time in chat rooms bashing other people to help you feel better about yourself, DAMN!"

This website is designed to help students understand and plan out their futures by discussing questions with other INTELLIGENT students. You do not fit into this discription and I believe everyone would be a lot happier if you did not reply to their questions anymore.

I don't have to substantiate my intelligence on the internet. Yes this website is a resource; however, do you expect students to give you a magic secret such that you will score perfect on the USMLE. I seriously doubt correlating your MCAT and class rank will tell you anything regarding your USMLE scores and asking such a question is not benificial to yourself or others. Do yourself a favor and just study well.

As someone who often fits the above description (you reading this LAZYGUY?), let me say that studying hard will benefit you no matter what your goal is.

However...

...you can't say it any better or simpler than this. This sould be a slogan.

I want to have a well rounded lifestyle and am trying to figure out a habit of study that will allow me to reach my goals and still commit time to my family. This does not make me a "LAZYGUY" and it is not ridiculous for me to reach out to other students to help determine what is best for me. So, thanks for nothing, and I hope that the people you reach out to will be more generous and kind than you have been to me.
Good luck being an understanding and compassionate physician.

😕 Woops! Sorry 'bout that. It's easy to see how that could have been misread. Cheers!
