Hey I noticed that some of the frequent posters might actually be on adcoms at programs and I had a question regarding class rank. I've noticed that my class of about 140 people has a class average of about 86.45 something or other. Furthermore, so many of these averages are so close amongst us, I can't imagine why a reasonable person can really think that class rank can be very important. What I mean is, you can have an average of about 86.45, about in the middle and be ranked about 70 or so. Yet you can have an average of about 86.3, an incredible difference right(sarcasm), and be ranked much lower, like 90 or 100. Now I know a lot of schools are pass fail and I think that makes a lot of sense because this problem doesn't come up, but what about the people with a decent average in a very competitive class. It makes you look like **** to be ranked that low when really it's so slight as to be insignificant almost.
I have heard that sometimes you can choose to have your class rank left out of your app, but it seems that most programs request your "academic standing" and I'm not quite sure what that means, but it seems it would include your class rank. Anyways what's the real deal with that? Do you guys take all of this info into consideration when looking at class rank or what?
