Does anyone know which college of optometry has the smallest class-size? The largest? (Of course, the numbers may vary slightly from year to year, so let's try to use recent figures.)

Thanks.

UMSL and Oklahoma generally have very small class sizes as well as Alabama. I have two friends who started UMSL this year and there are only like 36 in their class.

I know SCO is 124.

From what I remember Bama and Ferris are like 30 kiddos, and PCO is like around 200 somethin.

UABSO accepts 40-45 students each year depending on the quality of the applicants.

Here, I have a real question about class size. What are everyone's opinions about class sizes? Do you think small class sizes are better or if bigger is better? It is said that smaller class size = better 1 on 1 learning, but some of the most popular schools like PCO and ICO have the biggest classes. So what does everyone think about class size? Is small or large preferred? Any OD students have any thoughts about being part of either a small or large class?

It depends on what's better for the particular student.

I think our class size at SCO is perfect (124). Not too large but not teeny either. You know there are always one or two people you can't stand, and if I only had 30 classmates I feel like we'd all be up in each other's business. Some people like having a small class and that's fine, but I wouldn't. 120 is big enough that you can hang out with different groups or stay away from that one person who annoys the crap out of you. 😀

Come on guys -

Aren't we above asking if size really matters?

:laugh:😀:highfive::claps::banana:😆:corny:

Yeah...so do you have something to contribute?

Some people prefer small class sizes b/c of more 1:1 time, but don't like it because you're with the same 50-60 ppl for 4 yrs.

Some people like bigger class size because...of the variety of people? I don't know. If I knew, I wouldn't ask.

But the point was to see if there was something I wasn't considering.

lighten up - it was a joke. 😱

I think I'll like PUCO's class size ~100. Not too big, not too small. Enough variety in a class that size without it being too unruly.

NSUOCO's class size is 28, but they only accept students from 9 different states (Oklahoma + the ones bordering it).

I'm inclined to feel neither too big nor too small would be good as far as class-size is concerned. Of course, "too much," either way, will be determined subjectively, but something like 200+ strikes me as too large to encourage much professor–student interaction (then, maybe some students wouldn't desire any); a number in the twenties, on the other hand, could easily come to be unbearable if one doesn't like enough of one's classmates (or if one really dislikes even just one or two), as one will be stuck with maybe the entire group for at least a couple of years (after which, I suppose, one would be moving out of the classroom).
