I am looking into taking the pre reqs for Medical school admission. My top 2 choices are DO schools so I have a few questions

When calculating retakes in the DO GPA, are all classes counted or are only science classes counted?

I am looking into starting my pre reqs I know that the schools I am interested in require

Biology
Chemistry
Organic chemistry
English
Physics

but, I am wondering what other classes would be beneficial to take before the MCAT and before Med school? I know ive heard biochemistry, and Anatomy are there any others?

Thank you 🙂

For most DO schools (excluding TCOM, if that's one of the schools you're interested in), all retakes replace the previous grade, regardless of whether it was science or non-science.

Genetics seemed pretty useful for me on the MCAT, beyond the usual pre-reqs. I've heard that for med school (but not really for the MCAT) biochem can be helpful, but since I don't start until the fall, I wouldn't know firsthand. In general, the consensus is that med school classes are so different than undergrad classes that taking anatomy/biochem/etc. are not all that helpful in the long run. I would only take those classes if you really want to and if they'll help you graduate.

This is my friend answering who is a 1st year med student right now.

Biochem won't do you any good on the MCAT but it will help you when you take it in med school. A familiarity with biochem and anatomy is unarguably useful, however not necessary.

Personally I felt that Biochem was actually very beneficial while studying for the MCAT. Obviously others do not feel the same but either way taking the course wont hurt in preparation for the MCAT as well as school

Agreed. Biochem is great for the MCAT.

I'd definitely recommend taking biochem and/or genetics if you can manage to fit them into your course-load at some point in time, just because of the fact that you will see them again and that there is a trend of biochem becoming a pre-req at med schools in general. Also, if you read the CIB, a good number of schools already have courses like biochem or genetics listed as "recommended."

Maybe im the only one that felt this way, but mammalian physiology helped me out ALOT on the mcat. It covered eveything from endocrinology to muscle movement and atkin and myosin with ATP and calcium.

I saw all these things again on my mcat so I felt very confident with it. Just a recommendation.
