A professor asked what I thought was a confusing question yesterday. The portal area on a histological slide of the liver was identified and we were asked what this indicated. Two of the choices were "zone 1 of the functional liver lobule" or "periphery of classic liver lobule". I thought both of these answer choices would be correct, but apparently the answer was "periphery of the classic liver lobule".

My question then is does zone 1 of the liver acinus NOT include the portal zone, but rather just the hepatocyte directly adjacent to it?

Thanks

You should look up the different types of lobule classification in the liver. It will make things super clear.

I understand the concept of the two classifications and what is meant by a classic liver lobule vs a liver acinus.

Specifically, I am asking what exactly are the boundaries of Zone 1, something that I have not been able to find.

Does zone 1 of the liver acinus contain the portal area or not?

My professors answer to this question would imply that the while the portal area is not contained in any zone of the Rappaport acinus of the liver, it IS contained within the classical lobule of the liver, an implication that does not make a whole lot of logical sense to me which is why I am questioning it in the first place.

I think you need to think of it in terms of perfusion vs anatomical boundries as the classifications depend on one or the other. Hopefully this diagram will help.

Although you are right that there will obviously be overlap between the two, I think the image or language of the question might be the problem here, Cant say much without looking at the image.
