As clerkship applications are just around the corner, I just wanted to ask you all what you thought a competitive GPA for non "high powered" programs would be. There is a lot of discussion about the top tier residency programs, but what about lesser known programs that are great as well? I want to approach the clerkship process like applying to undergrad and have high reach, reach, and safety programs but it's really difficult to determine which programs are in the reach and safety categories.

Thanks!

I believe like most situations, and I'm sure this isn't the answer you want to hear, it totally depends on a combination of the specific situation/program/person applying. If they really like you, they will be more willing to overlook a lower than average GPA. I'm sure there's some programs that only even look at above a certain GPA, which maybe some here could help out with. But if you really want to know if a program has a hard cutoff that they don't advertise you could always send an anonymous email to current or past residents there, but it's not really a question I would want to ask in person because it doesn't make you sound very confidant.

Throughout the process of researching programs, speaking with students who have graduated and current P4 students out right now I've come to realize that there are A LOT of really solid programs across the US.

Personally I think if you have above 3.0 gpa and are in the top 50% of your class you should be good to go (just stating an opinion based on my clerkship application experience so far).
