During your years of clerkship, do DPM students have the opportunity to choose where they would like to go, or does your school specifically assign you?? Is it beneficial to do clerkships within programs you may be interested in doing a residency??

You apply for clerkships and are usually given what you ask for or close to it. A program can only accomodate so many students at a time. So with some of the more popular programs, they may ask you to consider other months. I would definitely suggest clerking at programs that interest you concerning residency. If you have a good month, they are much more likely to choose you over someone they met strictly for interviews.

I will also add that some program curriculums allow for more clerkships than others and some programs will actually choose the months that you can clerk. Students in those programs run into problems when they only have specific months they can clerk and their desired programs can't accomodate them those months. Again, that is just program dependent. At DMU, your entire last year is spent clerking so it isn't an issue.

thanks so much.

are clerkships usually offer in 1 month blocks?? do the programs offer a place to stay if necessary, or are you expected to sublease?? I ask this because I know of some medical schools in Canada offer living arrangements if spending some of the school year in another city...

Both depend on the clerkship. Clerkships are generally one month but I stayed at one of mine for two and a half months. They like to give all of the students an equal opportunity to clerk at their program but if they have room, they usually don't mind multiple months. As far as housing, some programs have a place for you to stay while others have deals with apartment complexes or hotels. Residents will often rent out a room as well. Most programs are very used to students rotating with them so they almost always have something in place.
