I agree with urge that the thread about changing the forum was too long for some of us to read or catch up on when we haven't read it in some while. So I want to know as do others, what's the consensus? Is Bannana gonna change things here because some people get offended when they post "I scored a 250, what are my chances in anesthesia" and we rip them. Or when they ask whats the best program out there without ever searching the previous threads and someone tells them to do a search. I don't find that the inflammatory comments are directed at anyone that asks legitimate questions but to post your board scores to show how well you did is inflammatory from the start. These are the only times students get flamed here. If you think the other disputes are inflammatory then you are going to have a long residency my friends. Just b/c Mil gets on your case, don't get your panties in a wad. He gets on everyones case, grow up. You will have attendings that are much more hostile. What, are you going to run to the PD every time someone raises their voice or criticizes you?

I have a suggestion. We have a ASA forum, a jobs forum and a crna issue forum. We can make a medical student forum for all the repeated questions that seem to come up every year at the same time. Then people like myself and Mil don't have to ever venture into that area. For the other questions and threads just post at will and stop being so sensitive. How else are you guys gonna learn anything if you don't post and ask questions, stupid or not. Ask your stupid question, we will tell you it's stupid, learn and move on. BTW, if someone disagrees with you tough ****. Don't get so offended. it won't be the last time for sure but if you get offended every time you will struggle through this life and career more than everyone else.

So administrators, do your thing. Go ahead and change up the BEST DAMN FORUM on this site. Push your weight around again. After all, its your site not ours😉. Cater to the few that have some fragile egos. You understand that there are more complaints about this site than all the others put together because it is the one site that is visited the most by far, right. Or better yet, why don't you administrators join in, instead of swooping in with a heavy stick from time to time. Why not participate more and call people out when they are unreasonable or hostile.

It is the natural progression of this career (medicine in general) to feel intimidated from time to time. There are many people on this forum that were intimidated at one time and now are regular contributers. they fought through it and it has undoubtedly made them better. In my few years here I have watched a few that would lurk here and there with a post every once and a while who now post everyday. Their progression is obvious. I don't understand this running to mommy mentality that people have when someone criticizes them. What are you going to do later in life.

Administrators, you are being an inabler.

Noy, I thought this post by Lee Burnett in that thread explained the administration's (at least, the admin that matters most) position nicely:

Thanks to the members that have publicly and privately expressed their opinions on the forum.

We are always looking at ways to improve the SDN forums. Based on the significant member input, we feel this forum is working well.

We acknowledge that there are certainly a few members here with strong viewpoints and posting styles which other members can find annoying, but (at least in my opinion) those differences can and should be worked-out among the members of the forum.

Of course, for those who absolutely cannot stand another member, the 'ignore' feature is always available.

I support the work that the moderators do here. They provide valuable help and education for 100s of SDN members -- and beyond that, they are genuinely good people.

To sum up for Urge, the discussion basically went something like this:

Whiners: "Waaaaah, people on SDN Anesthesia are mean and scary and don't make us feel like the precious little gems that our mommies told us we are! 🙁"

Forum regulars (and many lurkers): "How 'bout a nice big glass of STFU? PS - We rule!"

After much observation I would like to add my two cents now that this issue has settled out.

Summary: There was a lot of discussion about the direction of the forum, a bunch of people got all riled up and nothing changed,

First of all, this "controversy" will pass. They all do. If you are like me the details become very fuzzy after a while (maybe I am just getting old). Lots of things have come and gone on SDN. I remember when the biggest controversy around here was deciding if people had to be registered members to post. Somehow I have managed to forget the details or the previous “secession” of the anesthesia forum and our return to the regular location.

The forum is NOT going to change. This is the biggest message that I can convey to everyone. It is obvious that the majority of persons want the board to stay the way it is, and the majority rules. The “laissez-faire” style of moderation will continue. Some things obviously will not be tolerated: spammers, trolls, CRNA arguments (there is now a special place for this) etc. As you might have noticed 3 of the 4 mods of this forum as well as multiple members of this forum have some pretty strong opinions about certain issues. I think that I speak for the others when I say that we welcome discussion from everyone. While everyone should try and keep it civil I think that even those who may be reluctant to post should “come out of the closet” and contribute. If someone argues with you just argue right back. They “old-timers” and frequent posters likely will appreciate the difference in opinion that everyone can offer. However don’t be surprised or upset when you are blasted for something obviously dumb or failing to do a search first.

It is unfortunate that certain members have chosen to complain about the style here. The unfortunate part is not that they complained (we want to hear this info) but rather that they were not entirely pleased with how the forum was run. SDN would like for everyone here to be happy with things but this unfortunately is not realistic so we just have to do the best we can. Rather than joining with the masses and becoming part of the “herd mentality” that seems to prevail on these forums – I would suggest that rather than labeling these folks whiners or complainers that you just let them be. I have communicated with a few of them by private message and I can assure you that they are normal folks with no axe to grind and that their life experience etc, would rival anyone elses on this board. There are always going to be people in life that act like turds and that you are forced to put up with, anyone who has been through residency will attest to that. Maybe they are just miserable to begin with, maybe they can’t get laid, whatever. Just ignore them. We do have a function that lets you ignore certain users. Also if a thread is an off anesthesia topic, don’t read it if you don’t like the topic.

As I stated in another post in another thread, there is no big conspiracy for the anesthesia forum to be invaded and rampant censoring to occur. That is definitely NOT the case. This issue has been discussed at the highest level. I know that certain users really have a bone to pick with the admin. here but I can assure you that admin/mods are all pretty reasonable. I am not a schill for them either. In fact, I really do not like the style of one in particular, but that is besides the point. All the staff is an extension of Lee (the dude who started this site). I don’t know Lee personally, but he has always seemed like a reasonable guy to me. Pretty much all the staff feels the same way, in fact there is a thread in the mod forum somewhere that parallels the Chuck Norris threads that pop up every now and then in various forums. Lee is the final word, and he has spoken on the issue as indicated in the previous post.

Plankton and banana started some threads to try and get some issues settled, they are just doing their jobs – no need to give them a hard time.

Comments are welcome but the issue at hand has been settled.
