hey... I'm applying to DO school this coming June. My question is what does clinical experience consist of? I volunteer at the hospital (feed patient and clean beds), volunteered in the OR (just watched different surgerys), and currently I am involved in a research on hypertension and I get to watch the doctors do the physical exam. I also will be shadowing a DO next month after my mcats. So I just wasn't sure if this all is considered clinical and please add any suggestions. Thanks!!! 😎

From what I understand, the adcoms want to see you participating in the research project. Just watching the others doing research is not considered "doing research". 🙂 Over all, your volunteer experiences are great.

i was just stating the clincal aspect of my research.. i input and analyze data as well : )

First off, remember that none of the pre-med/med students on this board can truly say what the admissions committees are thinking. But hey, I always say lack of knowledge about a subject shouldn't stop someone from pretending to be an expert, so here goes:

I think one of the main reasons clinical experience is important is to provide yet another layer of evidence that you have the skills and personality traits that will someday make you a good doc. Communication, leadership, committment, intellectual saavy - these are what adcoms are looking for, not specific clinical skills or a certain number of hours. I would focus on showing how your individual performance and accomplishments at each task make you a good candidate, rather than simply racking up thousands of hours or having a long list of experiences.

Quality>Quantity.

The other reason clinical experience is important is to show that you've done your homework and understand a medical career means you actually have to deal with sick people. It seems like already have some impressive experiences and are well on your way.

All of those count.

Good Job 👍 I wish I could have done all of these.
