Clinical experience / Shadowing

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
1. The aquatic therapy volunteer and cancer related camp counselor positions sound like they could be considered clinical volunteer experiences depending on what you actually do for these.
2. Continue with the hospital volunteering unless you really need to spend the extra hours on studying, because why not!
3. You just need to cold email doctors asking them if they would let you shadow. It's the only way to do it unless you have connections. Also, you might have better luck with doctors with private practices, but that's just based on my experience.

You actually have a fair amount of clinical experience. That doesn't seem to be the major problem, especially if you continue with your current activities. I would shadow more if I were you, as I don't think adcoms take shadowing abroad as seriously. I would try to cultivate something interesting and unique about yourself as well, as you want to jump off the page as interesting.

Thank you for your helpful response!
I was wondering how people have over 50 hours of shadowing? Do people usually shadow the same doctor on weekly bases or shadow A LOT of doctors?

Thanks!

Hi!

Thanks for your insight! Could you give me examples of something that will make me stand out?
I was totally thinking the same and my mom keeps telling me that too 😛 but I am struggling to come up with something.

Thank you!

Just do something that you are passionate about. Scuba diving, ballroom dance, sports, start a band, get a successful youtube channel going, start a nonprofit, something exciting and interesting.

People do both. It would be ideal to shadow a variety of specialties and doctors in different settings (ER, private clinics, etc.) just so you can get a general idea of what the day to day life of a doctor is. On the other hand, shadowing a single doctor for a long time can also be beneficial in that you'll be able to develop a better relationship with the doctor and maybe even get a letter of rec out of it.
