Hey you busy folks!
I was curious, when does clinical training start for you all...is it pretty standard to have probing and such first semester and prophy patients end of 1st spring? How about fillings? I just want to get a feel for the rest of the world.

Orally,
~Dr. Dilettante

PS I'm looking for a guy who has Calculus in his screen name...goes to school in Texas. Anyone seen him lately? Is there any way to search for partial screen names?

My school lets students "probing" each others (choose your partner carefully  ) and child prophy and fillings during Spring/Summer of 2nd yr.

PS: Are u looking for Math Calculus or Dental calculus? heard that Calculus guy is very "happy" (if you know what I mean  ) stop looking for him 😀

Yes to all of the above. To search, click on the search button above and choose "advanced search".

You are looking for: Calculus1

Found him! thanks for the help...we'll see how happy he is now.

We (NYU) started clinics at May our 2nd semester. We started probing and giving alginate impressions (making mouth guards) on each other sometime in 2nd year. So far as a 3rd year I have 19 patients....probably half of them are active, the others are due for 6 month recall. 1 full denture case, 3 partial dentures, 3 future crowns, 1 bridge, 1 patient that needs anterior maxillary veneers and probably the rest that are operative....i lose track. still lookin for that endo case tho.

as for our oral surgery rotation, it's 1 week rotations 3rd year (8a-8p) and 1 day rotations as 4th year. for 3rd year, we need to do 5 extractions in that week span (which i hear isn't hard to do). so far i have 2 (only my 2nd day)...and i've done a simple alveoplasty.

as far as fillings, my first filling was around june of my 2nd year. we didnt' really have patient interactions my first year...hth!

Summer 1st year cleanings, Fall 2nd year operative

At Case, we will do oral exams and sealants on the local schools' second graders for 2 weeks at the end of first semester of first year. Also, we will probe and clean on each other this semester and on real patients in the second semester.

Can any of you student doctors out there help me with this question I have for my Prevention class:
What are some effects on teeth from drinking too much alcohol, if any?

Damn, you're ahead of the game! get those prostho cases done ASAP, your life will be much easier once 4th yr comes around. Make those patients your VIPs.

All I can think of is erosion of linguals if there is vomiting involved, and of course the increase in oral cancer but that might not be considered an effect on "teeth".

Or perhaps when people get drunk, they bust their ass and fall on their face, or fight etc etc causing tooth trauma or loss. Or for prevention, I know at least when I get drunk I pass out before I brush my teeth 😀

Increase in tooth decay, increase risk of gum disease and oral cancer. Alcoholic drinks, and the mixers used with them, often contain high levels of sugar.
