Clinical Professor vs Professor

What are the differences between Clinical Professors and regular Professors?

I imagine that clinical profesors only work with patients -- basically they're a university hospital's private practice equivalent and they're not involved with teaching or research.

I believe most regular professors are paid a fixed salary. Would clinical professors not be paid a fixed salary, instead they would be paid through how much they collect from patients?

If there are any other differences, please let me know.

the whole academic title business is pretty school specific....

but speaking generally, Clinical Professors have as their primary obligations patient care/service activities. they may still be involved in teaching of residents and medical students (actually, are USUALLY involved in teaching of residents and medical students) in exchange to keep the academic title. they may or may not be in private practice, and can actually be full time employees of the school that grants them the title. so their salary can come from the med school and not necessarily from patient care.

sometimes community docs apply for privileges at a teaching hospital, and sometimes they may be granted a voluntary title as well. in this case, they receive no funding from the institution since they are in private practice, but as a condition of their title, they are fair game to be approached by the school for student and/or residency activities.

professors with so-called unmodified titles, i.e. "regular" professors have as their primary obligations research, or at least, non-clinical duties. they can also be involved in teaching of residents and medical students depending on the center. their salaries usually come from the schools.

in both cases salary support can also come from research or educational grants, and the salary structures are very different...usually clinical professors can make more because they can generate clinical dollars, while regular professors may not.

for example, here at columbia, an asst professor may start out at $65K, while an asst clinical professor may start out at well over $100K.
