Hi everyone,

I've been an active follower of all SDN posts, but have been unable to find posts relevant to autism research. I have been on a frantic search for schools that work with this population, although the few that I have looked up, of them do little neuro-imaging research. On a much broader scale, I work with neuro-developmental disorders (including ADHD,ODD and the likes), but I am curious to know of clinical faculty that specifically target this group. I do know of schools with centers for autism research, but alas, most of them do not have primary CLINICAL faculty focussed on autism or neuro-imaging work related to it. I would be grateful if anyone could provide me with some useful leads/professors working in this field. I am looking majorly at clinical programs, because in light of my background and my future interests (which includes intervention studies for autism/neuro-developmental disorders), clinical science appears most suited to my career profile.

Thanks a ton!

Brooke Ingersoll at Michigan State might be someone to look into (she's faculty in Clinical Psych and an autism [primarily AAC/FCT] researcher).

University of Pennsylvania, Virginia Tech, UCSD/SDSU Joint Doctoral Program, UT Austin, all have Autism/neuroimaging focused faculty.

KU has a active autism research program with Ann Turnbull, PhD. UW has an autism center as part of their child clinical psychology training with Wendy Stone, PhD. I attended a neuropsychology conference where a professor from UW did imaging studies. I will have to do some research to find her name, but I do remember that she was doing imaging studies.

They are doing a longitudinal study of children with Autism using imaging. There are a number of Universities involved with the research, including UW, UNC, Washington University, and University of Pennsylvania. Here is a link:

Laura Klinger at UNC- Chapel Hill (Mark Klinger is there too, but he is Experimental)

These two schools have multiple autism researchers in clinical psych, and/or autism research groups:

Barton, Eigsti, and Fein at the University of Connecticut.
Also, Bebko, Perry, and Weiss at York University (in Toronto, Canada).

Thanks a bunch to all of you! Boy, I didn't expect to come across so many!

I believe most major University Psychology Departments have either predoctoral or postdoctoral training focusing on Autism since there are many Grants and Federal Funding in the area of Autism or Autistic Spectrum Disorders. UTSW has a Autism Center and they also have predoctoral and postdoctoral interns working in that unit.

Florida State has an Autism Researcher (Amy Wetherby) that can be combined within the clinical psych phd program

Oklahoma State has a pretty strong autism program, especially among the school psych people there

Hofstra University has a great Autism research lab run by Dr. Gilbert.

Here are the clinical Ph.D's I applied to this year with an emphasis in autism research:

  • Emory
  • Vanderbilt
  • Auburn
  • UConn
  • VA Tech
  • GA State
  • FL State
  • Rutgers
  • U of Utah
  • U of Washington
  • U of California Santa Barbara (Clinical, Counseling, School)
  • Florida State
  • U of Miami
