Has anyone worked as one? Is it possible to start a career as a CRA after getting my bachelor's in Bioengineering? I don't know where exactly to start since most jobs as CRAs are looking for 2 years experience in the field. Should I just take some extension classes in clinical research and get a certificate?

Most CRO's want 2 years monitoring experience and preferably an RN. In NC, PPD will hire and train CRA's with no experience if you are willing to move to Wilmington. There are several other positions available without all the travel (as a CRA you can be travelling anywhere from 40% to 95% of the time - you basically live in an airport!). You can be a study coordinator, CR Assist, project coordinator, regulatory coordinator, data manager, or even work at an IRB (institutional review board). Look at websites for Quintiles, PPD, Parexel, Inveresk, and university based clinical trial groups to get some ideas. Good luck!

I was looking for a research job my last year of college. It ended up being a clinical research coordinator job. I've been here for two years now, and am headed to med school. It has served it's purpose well, however if you are looking to get on as a CRA this is a great way to do it. You need atleast two years in research. Then after that you should be rather marketable. I constantly here companies looking for CRA's all the time. You might try and find a teaching hospital where the docs are faculty at a med school. Most all of them will be doing research and are always looking for someone to coordinate their studies. Good luck to you.

i've been working in clinical research for the past few years, and just got into medical school for the next year...

i've learned a LOT from working as a CRA (at three NY institutions, and 1 in chicago), but there's a ton of variability. some jobs are amazing, others will have you do little more than data entry.

IMHO, the best jobs are ones that are in small departments or in ones just
starting; when everyone else is learning the ropes too, you get more than
enough opportunities to get your hands dirty.

CRA jobs are hard to find, but mainly because people don't know where/how to look for them. i recommend going through your school's pre-health department, which should give some info.

outside of that, taking initiative is HUGE. find the departments at teaching hospitals you're interested in working in, and send the head honchos and doctors email directly asking for work. ask them to forward to people they
know that are looking for CRAs...

if you're looking to work for a company, it's easier to get a job at a hospital
in the above way first, then get some experience and move on from there.

as a stepping stone to med school, the job has been second to none. i've even ran into ex-applicants who gave up one they found other health-related career paths, either in hospitals or corporations.

hey
i've also worked as a study coordinator the past 10 months (last friday was my last day!) and it's been an awesome experience. it gave me a lot of patient interaction and definitely convinced me that med is for me.
i think a lot of CRAs start out as coordinators but i know some companies like PPD hire people with no experience. good luck!
