Clinical Research

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've done a similar activity, and I would count that under research, instead of clinical experience.

I am not sure exactly what your job descriptions are, but I am quite sure that your nursing staff will take care of patients and you won't be taking vitals or anything medically related. In other words, I think your work will be closer to research rather than typical clinical volunteering like CNA, transporter, or scribing.

I had done alot of bio lab research before, but had very little clinical experience.

This summer, I applied to various volunteer positions at hospitals, and only got one call back. Well, it was from Maryland School of Medicine. But it's not exactly what I had expected. They are going to make me work in research (because of my background), in a hospital/research center setting with alot of patients who are going to various clinical trials for new meds. I work with two MD/PhD's and various nursing staff.

Now, I am not sure whether this falls under research or clinical experience. Thoughts?

That sounds like clinical/translational research, which is pretty handy.

I think I read a post on here that said if you have a significant gap year like that, you can split it up in your activities section and explain each aspect of it. So you could put it under research and clinical, but explain different aspects of it. Or, you can just choose one and explain your interactions with patients as well, then describe it during your interview. It isn't going to matter all that much. Adcoms understand that clinical research usually falls under both categories.
