First year resident in anesthesia

I am interested in clinical research but have never done any research projects and my program encourages research but does not provide all the means or ideas to get something started. However they are very supportive.

I was wondering for all of you that have done research, mainly clinical, how do you start brainstorming for ideas and also make sure you are not doing something already done

I am hoping to do a project I can work on for all my residency

Any post or private posts would be appreciated

Thanks

Hi Dryacku,

I also am interested in doing some research for my residency years. I am a fourth year med student applying to anesthesia this year. I had some research experience in the past. What I gathered from my past experience is, I did not start one on my own, but I joined in on one. I had to get in contact with a faculty who is doing a research that I am interested at another university. You can start emailing these attendings and such. I know there's a lot of research being done on the elderly and anesthesia right now. You will have to do a "literature survey" which is obtaining and reading other published articles/journals to see if anything similar had been done. you can do this online. you then write a "proposal" to get some funding to run the research. I'll try to find out more for us.

It's nice that your department says they are "very supportive", but if you have never participated in a research project, you will need more than their support.

You need a mentor, or someone who will guide you through the process. You need to find a topic of interest, develop the study methodology, obtain IRB approval, recruit patients, collect data, analyze data, and compose your findings.

That typically takes 2-3 people a year or two. As a resident, you may be able to accomplish about 15-20% of the work listed above, tops, over the span of your three-year residency if you have no prior research experience.

If your dept truly "supports" your endeavor, they should be supplying the manpower. Otherwise, I suggest you hold on to your dream of clinical research and aim for a career in academics. You'll have plenty of time after you graduate to do those things.
