For anyone who doesn’t know:

Right now psychologists who want to provide services to a patient with Medicare are required to have a referral from a physician, chiropractors, optometrist, etc.

This bill would allow psychologists to simply see the patient without the referral.

Any psychologist, student, family member of us, family member with Medicare, person with Medicare, etc would benefit from removing this obstacle.

Consider using the link to let your legislators know you support this bill.

This one is big, folks. So, instead of bellyaching about APA or the state of things, here is where you can actually do something for the field. I'd actually suggest calling your reps vs e-mail. I guarantee you it has a bigger impact. But, as most of you will not do that. The least you should do is send in the form letter as it will take minimal time from you.

Yes, please show your support. It only takes a few minutes.

For reference, the legislation in question is titled the "Medicare Mental Health Access Act." The Senate bill is S. 2772 and the corresponding House bill is H.R. 884.

Done. Thanks for sharing and will spread the message to other colleagues.

I actually sent this in for all states in which I am licensed and have called my local state reps already. This is a big one.

I do not take insurance and have opted out of Medicare years ago. However, as previously mentioned, this legislation is profoundly important for professional psychology and any psychologist who even thinks of doing some clinical practice will benefit from the passage of this legislation.

Passage of the Medicare Mental Health Access Act may also lead to the ability of psychologists to bill evaluation and management codes and, as someone who uses evaluation and management codes daily, this will amount to a substantial increase in the bottom line regarding Medicare reimbursement and possibly other insurers as well.

This is the bottom line. They've framed the issues differently for advocacy purposes, but this is really just another iteration (I've lost count) of the push for CMS to place psychologists in the same category as other doctoral-level practitioners.
