How much codeine containing cough syrup could you sell to a patient over the counter in one 48 hour period? and how much codeine is contained in that volume?
In my states law manual it says :
a.
240 cc (8 ounces) of any controlled substance containing opium.
b.
120 cc (4 ounces) of any other controlled substance.
c.
48 dosage units of any controlled substance containing opium.
d.
24 dosage units of any other controlled substance.

So would be be 8 oz or 4 oz? i know its an opiate but didnt think it was 8 ounces.. anyone know what its like in their state?

This is almost never done because it is a major pita as you have to order the correct bottles with the correct labling for otc use and maintain the proper documentation with appropriate professional discretion. The DEA is cracking down very strongly right now, I would not touch this with a 100 mile pole.

This is for the Schedule V drugs that are not Rx only so can be sold without a prescription. Opium and codeine are different things. I can't think of any commercial product with opium that would fall under this law, so I guess you would have to compound it. For codeine, there's Robitussin AC and Robitussin DAC, both with 10 mg/5 mL of codeine.

So the answer is 120 mL which contains 240 mg of codeine.

You do what my pts do and buy a couple of bottles from every pharmacy within reasonable biking distance from their appt.

BTW, I didn't know there were some states that allowed for OTC codeine. Working in Toronto, I have sold staggering quantities of codeine to American tourists who told me they stocked up whenever they came to Canada.

Interesting, what would happen though if you're stopped by border patrol?

The answer to this is different based on the state law...

We allow it in this state, but I have never seen a pharmacy that actually sells it OTC. There are probably some in rural areas that do, but none here in the hood... I mean city. 😀
