It has pretty much gotten me through 2 years of med school (including Board study). So to the other regular coffee drinkers out there (pre- and post-Step 1), will you (or did you) for sure drink coffee the morning of Step 1 and possibly give yourself a boost with some more half way through??

Honestly, what's the protocol for this? I'm pretty sure I would be ridiculously sluggish to start the exam if I didn't have coffee in the morning, but I'm also worried about the inevitable drop a few hours later. Anybody out there contemplating the same thing?

I have wicked addiction to Diet Coke that can be handled only with an alternative source of caffeine (coffee being one of them). I have managed to make it this far hyped up on it and despite my best attempts to quit early in boards studying- I have failed. You can bet there will be like 3 bottles of Diet Coke in my locker next week when I take my exam. I need a swig at each break or something. I think when your body is used to it it's worse to deny it!

Anyhow, I feel your pain.

What I'm planning on doing is having coffee in the morning and Excedrin part way through. I'm sure I'll have a headache after awhile and it's got plenty of caffeine in it to keep me going. Also, maybe a cold starbucks mocha for backup. 🙂

4 20oz diet mountain dews and a big bag of peanut m&m's. BRING IT ON!

I am a pretty regular 1 cup a morning coffee drinker...not excessive but I def. "need" it to start the day.

If you have been regularly drinking coffee throughout med school (and through exams)...then you shouldn't change that habit for the boards. I agree that it would make you sluggish throughout your exam.

My test is tomm. and I am taking 1 starbucks frappacino and a bottle of diet coke...just in case i feel extra sluggish/tired and need a boost.

We'll see how it goes.
