I don't recall being given a specific prompt for UNC's application, but that was 8 years ago. In fact, I'm not sure we had to write anything at all if not applying for a scholarship. I'd guess most people write about important events in their lives or their inspiration. I know that's not terribly helpful, but if you need to get info about the school itself, I'm all over it. 😛

If you use the common app, the topic choices are usually much easier to deal with than the ones on the paper applications.
