College of Human Medicine, MSU waitlist

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am on the alternate list as well. Have not heard back as of today. My fingers are crossed!!🙁

I'm on their waitlist too. Not to be negative, but I was told by the administration on my interview day that very few people get off their waitlist. I wish you both the best. A lot of things can happen in the next few weeks 🙂

I'm not sure about the waitlist, but I wanted to say that I walked by the admissions office today, and everyone was hard at work..so keep your hopes up.

Best of luck

Mossjoh😉

Mossjoh,

Do you know how often the adm. com. meets to make a decision?

They usually meet on Tuesdays...my mentor is on the committee. I believe they have the meetings Tuesdays around 5PM

I heard from the Dr. Shaffer on a tuesday evening (8pm ish). I hope to see some of you there in the fall!

Hey Stan:

Interviewed in Nov and waitlisted in Jan. Can't wait for some kind of decision. On the bright side they could have easily rejected us by now, so there is still hope 🙂

I was also curious about the waiting list at MSU and posted the question about a month ago... someone wrote back that about 13% get off the waiting list.

Hope this helps.

I just got off the ?alternate list? today.

ADREXEL~Congrats, dude. So will be be deciding between multiple schools?? Did you get a phone call?? Did you do anything special, like send letters updates, etc??

Anyway, congrats!!!! I am still on the damn list!!!

Much Luck!

Congratulations Adrexel! :hardy: Please share the details with us..

Hey guys, I did write a letter of interest and a letter updating my list of activities after I got put on the alternate list. I also contacted the student who interviewed me and just generally asked him what I can do to get off the alternate list. Here's what he had to say:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

In general, as I might have mentioned, the whole application process is a
mystery. No matter how high you might have been "scored", sometimes it just
comes down to how the incoming class composition looks.

What that means is, it really is an "Alternate List", rather than a waiting
list, as there is no order of rank (or so they say). Rather, if someone drops
from the list, they replace them (supposedly) with someone similar to that
person.

I think you're highly qualified, and they do too, I'm sure. So, at this point,
you could either chill out for a while (if you've got other interviews) and see
how things go until May--often, acceptances to other schools are a great
bargaining tool. For instance, despite the fact that I had been accepted to
other schools, I "reminded" them that I wanted to go to CHM. But DO NOT use it
in an arrogant way....they don't like to be "threatened".

If that's not an option, or you're anxious to know what's going on, more than
likely a "letter campaign" might be a better idea, followed by a visit with Dr.
Shafer. They have a protocol on the website that details how to go about
assessing your application....you could set up a meeting with Dr. Shafer via
email (ask her if you should fill out the assessment form before your meeting),
and make sure you have something new to say to her!!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

As far as attending, I think Michigan State is an awesome school, but with my career goals of becoming a surgeon, I think I'll probably end up somewhere else. I am also waiting on several other waiting lists, so if one of those opens up for me, one more space will open up for you guys at Michigan State!

Anyone heard back anything positive??

I am still waiting.🙁

I got into MSU yesterday. They rank 4th on my list. I was told from my second choice I am #8 on their waitlist, and I am high on the waitlist for my 1st choice. I hope I'll be able to give you guys my seat.

Congrats to domagnet as well!!! So, out of curiousity, what are your stats (and adrexel too)? Curious what "kind" of people they are "replacing". Anyway...way to go! There is hope for us still!!!

spin😀

Thanks for the co-rejoicing. I was a humanities major at a small no-name private school (3.0 sci, 3.7 non sci) and then went to a medical school's masters program (3.5). I have all the extracurrics you can think of. I hope that helps. Good luck to you!

My stats are neither exceptional nor poor, but I would say they are competitive (I applied as an out of state applicant). I think Michigan State is one of the few schools that truly looks at the whole applicant and whether you would fit in well with their program (given that you have the minimum credentials they are looking for). So, I don't think simply stating my stats would be of much help.

I was just asking because I was under the impression that they try to fill the open spot with someone "similar" to the person who a gave up that spot. I took that to mean stats...but I guess it inculde include sex, geography, where you went to college, ECs and ethnicity to name a few.
Anyway, its ok if you dont want to post the stats tho 🙂

Thanks!!!

Here's some stuff about me. I am an Asian Indian male and grew up in the Chicago area, went to a small liberal arts college called Knox College, and am currently in one of the medical master's programs. Some interesting features on my application were that I was in a rock band, play the sitar, am a Hospice Volunteer, and was a mentor to inner city kids in a research lab. I have pretty much done all the other standard pre-med stuff. Please let me know if you want any more information.

So do the MSUCOM people operate on plants, or beagles, or space aliens? I always found the name "College of Human Medicine" to be funny, it kinda implies that the D.O. folks are working with non-humans.

Going there for my post-bacc next fall though, good luck!

Any new acceptances to MSU CHM??

I am STILL Waiting to hear from CHM. 🙁

No news here either

thanks adrexel...now I know what I am up against 😉
Some pretty cool ECs though!

Anyways, are you accepting the offer, or do you have a better one elsewhere?

Spin😀

Hey e-spin,
I am accepting the offer, not because it is my first choice, but because it is my only acceptance. I am pretty high on several other waiting lists and like I said in my previous post, with my career interests in surgery, I will most likely end up going to one of those schools. So, hopefully another seat will open up for you!

Where's the movement? I'm wondering if one of you got my spot. I turned it down for EVMS late last week. Hopefully, the spot's being put to good use.

I am still eagerly waiting...!

So, I applied to both COM and CHM as an out-of-stater. I got accepted to COM (as an out of state--that's pretty good) but pretty much got blown off by CHM. They sent me that "send us $40 (or whatever it was)" soon after my AMCAS got in (mid August), but then I had to write them a letter in about March to get them to finally send me a secondary.

I'm thinking that the biggest reasons I didn't get in is:
1) I was an out of state resident at the time
2) They didn't really look at me until March

Since I am an out of state student, I decided to defer for a year to gain residency. I have since moved to Lansing (actually the Township of Lansing) and work in a lab on the 4th floor of the Biomed and Physical Science Building.

As I am defering and am taking a year off anyway, I have decided to reapply, so I call up the Admissions office at CHM to setup an appointment with someone in admissions, and they tell me that I must fill out a ASAP (the self evaluation form). I took a look at it, and it is full of a bunch of great questions that would have been good for me about 3 years ago, but now are basically useless ("How are you planning on studying for the MCAT????"---- I ALREADY TOOK IT AND DID WELL!!!!, etc.)

I still might try to get in and talk with someone, but I might just send in my application. I'm debating whether to do EDP or not. Part of the reason I want to talk to someone in CHM is to find out if I am qualified enough to get in with EDP or if I should apply normal and take my chances (finding out early is always nice). Or, if I apply EDP, will they move me to the normal pool? and will I not be at a big disadvantage?

Also, I was talking to a COM graduate about my dilemma the other day and he said that he heard that CHM has a lot of internal problems and may actually move off campus?!?!? To Grand Rapids or something? Anyone hear of this? (The Good 'ol Rumor Mill)

Anyone got any advice for me. Would be appreciated.

-=Eric

one more spot for you waitlisters !
im withdrawing today

where are you going instead, calip?

No, as far as I am aware, CHM is not going anywhere. We did hear that there is talk of some sort of medical education in Grand Rapids in which CHM may be involved, yet CHM isn't going anywhere.

Good luck to all of you on the waitlist.....

Mossjoh

Bad news...

I just called MSU and it seems the waitlist is not moving at all right now. The class is currently overbooked so if the waitlist moves at all it won't be for a few weeks. I got the impression that they're pretty much done accepting.

Is this really true??? Is the alternate list at CHM frozen???? Someone please melt it........🙁

Hey guys,
I will be giving up my seat soon (once I receive the official acceptance letter from my first choice school). So, hopefully one of you guys will get that spot!

Does anyone know if the class of 2003 at CHM is full?? Are they going to select applicants from the alternate list this year??
