Hey guys, as some of you know, I am a high school senior. Also though, I kinda need to decide where I'm going to attend in less than a week. I have narrowed it down to 2, but I am having a hard time finally choosing which to enroll. (tbh, I think I really decided subconsciously, but I just want to hear a few more opinions.) So here is the situation -

School D -
  • Offered me $10k in loans for freshman year (so assuming $40k total if I go 4 years w/out a job.)
  • Known to be ranked much high academically compared to 'School S', and for example stand in top 50's on US News.

School S -
  • Offered me $5k in loans for freshman year (so assuming $20k total if I go 4 years w/out a job.)
  • Less known, and for example stand in the top 160's on US News.

I feel like I'd fit in at either and my family doesn't really have any money to help me, whether they'd like to admit it or not  So I think my real question is, how much debt is too much debt to attend 'school d' when I believe my goal is to go to medical school. What do you guys think?

Um I'm confused - which one's cheaper?

And why not transfer if the loans don't cover it all?
If they don't, it makes sense that you'll die if you go to School S 😛

By the way, School D sounds fine if it offers substantially more opportunities than School S.
You'll be able to pay your debts off fine if you get into an affordable medical school

Both cover the cost of attendance, im just specifically talking about loans because i have to pay those back 😛
School s is the cheaper one, probably by 20k over 4 years.

By the way, they're similar in many respects (for example, both have around same amount of students, have research opportunities)

i'm still confused about the actual cost of the schools. School S is cheaper by 20K over the four years but are we talking 200k vs 180k or 40k vs 20k total? I am generally generally in favor of taking the cheap way out for undergrad but if you are going to be massively in debt either way than I would consider going for the more prestigious school. Sounds like you have your mind made up already though, good luck!!

Survivor DO

40k vs 20k in total. Sorry for the misunderstanding

If your only criteria is cost and reputation, go with the cheaper lesser known school.

Coming from Harvard with your BS in Medicinal Biology isn't near as impressive to Med school admissions than you think it is. 🙂

School D!

No way would I choose a school over 20K (which is really insignificant) over a school that has more opportunities! If we wer talking about a 50-60K difference then yeah, school s

But if it's only 20K difference, go to school D!

I have a similar choice but I'm choosing the more expensive school with better opportunities.

I also don't know whether or not to pursue a Liberal Arts Education as opposed to a state school in which I will probably get a really high GPA or a private school where it is ranked top 20 in academic rigor :scared: (but I like to be challenged and I like the intellectual body but I'm scared it actually might be too much for me)

The other school is 6000 a year tuition and i heard that to get a 3.5 GPA is a walk in the park.... lol

The public school is ranked in the top 110 in Regional Universities- North and has an endowment of only 5 million....

Comments?

I'm going to a top 100 school ftw!

Luckily there is a fair amount of undergraduate research (I've seen ugrad freshmen doing research in the hospital). Plus it's free for me so I won't have to worry about that, and there are many other nonclinical opportunities as well.

SO... my question is...

which school has an affiliated medical school, where can you get the best deal, and where is it easiest to get ugrad research?

Academic rigor is only part of the issue. If you're not happy with where you're at, it doesn't matter a damn about how hard or not hard the classes are.

Both have great opportunities (including research) and both have medical schools (that are considered more or less equal i think), im just struggling with cost vs prestige(and possibly academic rigor) i think.. Also, I really do think id be happy at both.

I like the area, the students and faculty a lot.

Studentsreview.com states the worst reviews on NJ state schools... Even Kean almost lost its accreditation!!

Thanks for all of the feedback guys! It's definitely helping.

Oh, and i will be sure to let you guys know when i finally decide

Oh, just an update if anyone actually cares

I chose School S. Can't wait to go 😀
