Why isnt melting point a colligative property? is it because it goes from solid to liquid so its not really an aq. solution?

Also, is high freezing point the same as the criteria for boiling point? (polar, high molecular weight, branching)

One of the colligative property is freezing point depression. The freezing point is lowered when the amount of the solutes is increased in solution. How is the freezing point and melting point related? Think about that one for a second.

I guess theoretically its the same thing (but opposite).. in melting heat is added and in freezing, heat is released? its at the same temp.

so i guess freezing point would follow the high melting point criteria?? (polar, symmetry ect..)?
 
My tutor told me something that helped me out with these properties. He said that solutes tend to favor the liquid phase. This applies for boiling point, freezing point, and melting point.

Solutes make the boiling point higher to keep it in the liquid phase.
Solutes make the freezing point lower to keep it in the liquid phase.
Solutes make the melting point lower to keep it in the liquid phase.

When something freezes it will tend to form pure crystals (hence why we purify things via recrystallization) although these crystals might have some remaining impurity in them.
