Hey all,

I may be headed to Colorado this fall, and I was wondering if any of you current students know anything about spanish programs available. At Nebraska they told me they have summer crash courses for Spanish at just about every experience level, and when I asked both my interviewers at Colorado they said "Yeah, I think so." But that doesn't exactly inspire confidence. Also, if anyone is in the rural track program I would like to hear a little about that too. Thanks

Great question. From their website, I know that they have a summer immersion elective. I've been learning Spanish via a private tutor at work and want to continue during med school. Maybe someday, I'll stop butchering the language 😉 .

How much are you paying for tutoring if you don't mind me asking you, thanks

Thankfully, I'm paying $0. Work pays for it - I think its $65/hr for 6-8 people. I want to try to get a decent base from which to continue in med school - somehow. The best thing that has helped me is traveling to MX for work. That's why the Spanish immersion elective is so attractive to me. I struggle with languages; however, I really want to learn Spanish.

At colorado Free University there are various levels of "Medical Spanish" classes you can take for about $70 a course (5 or 6 weeks/one night a week).

Colorado has not had any formal Spanish programs available in past years; just an evening class for about $150 for 10 weeks, offered by a local company. Students have been asking for more for years, and there have been sporadic student-driven efforts, but the administration would not provide.

This year, some MS1 and MS2 students got funding and organized a wide range of classes at very low cost ($40), with a range of levels. Apparently next year, this effort is finally going to become a more formal thing with funding, thanks to some highly motivated students and more support from the school.

As far as summer programs go, you can go anywhere and do anything you like, including attending the Nebraska summer programs. The CU summer Spanish immersion elective actually just means that you go and do one of these other programs for about 60 class hours, then turn in the paperwork when you get home, and you get CU credit for it. You don't have to pay tuition for the CU credits, but you do have to pay all costs for the program.

Speaking of CU and the Buffs. Whatever happened to that girl on the cross country team at CU that wrote threatening racist emails to a Hispanic team member? Just curious. I read that she the county DA or something filed a court order.
