Most residents live in the UWS, either the 72nd or 96th/Broadway areas. The commute is an easy 15 minutes on the 1 train. Many residents live in other parts of Manhattan (favoring access to the ACE, or 123 trains). Quite a few live walking distance from the hospital in Washington Heights, which is not THAT bad an area, and you will have a larger apartment for the money. The problem is that there is nothing to do up there, and no one will ever go out of their way to visit you. A bunch of residents also live in New Jersey, or the Bronx, and drive in. I love living in the UWS... it's a great neighborhood, tons to do all the time, incredible food, easy commute to work, easy access to Central and Riverside Parks, fast express trains.. totally worth the $$$.

What is the rent like in the UWS anyway?

Variable.

The average studio is $2000, and the average 1 bedroom is $2500, but you can do better if you look around. Most people I know pay around $1500/mo for a studio. Check out craigslist, and nofeelistings.com.

Upper West all the way.

It's worth the extra $ if you ask me.

How do you manage to pay 24K for rent with a resident's salary? I heard Columbia has a housing stipend. Is this included in your 47K salary or is it separate?

I have a friend living in a nice studio (5th floor walkup) at 104th/Amsterdam (one block from subway) and she's paying $1100/mo. That's a very good deal. It's a Keyah place too, so it's nicely upgraded inside too. Check out http://www.keyah.com

The housing stipend at Columbia is $3000/yr. Total cash compensation is about $49,500 for a CA-1.

Do residents in NYC get to claim RENT as a PRE-TAX Expense or do you just have your checks direct-deposited into your landlord's bank account? I'm sure not everyone finds those $1100/mo GEMS.

:wow: :wow: Is Right!
