I have been accepted into the UC Berkeley Extension Pre-med Certificate program and the Columbia University MS in Human Nutrition program. I am a California resident living in the Bay Area, so UCB is more convenient. However, I want to choose the program that will most directly improve my academic qualifications for medical school. I am less concerned about the cost of the program as I am with the potential boost it can provide my application.
Here are my credentials:
3.41 cumulative - AMCAS recalculated it as 3.32 - with an upward trend in which I averaged around 3.7 over my last five semesters.
31Q MCAT (9 PS, 11 VR, 11 BS)
60+ hours of shadowing both primary care and specialists
150+ hours ER volunteer
3 years of undergrad genetics research with 3 presentations at conferences (including one where I was one of the keynote undergraduate speakers)
1 year in a study abroad program in Italy (earned a minor in Philosophy)
Have played guitar for 12 years and have studied musical theory extensively - also have independently taught guitar lessons
Many other volunteer experiences
If you could provide some insight into my decision between the two programs in terms of what is best for my personal situation I would be extremely grateful.
