I want to apply to Columbia's Post Bac program in the Spring. Can anyone tell me what kind of applicants they are looking for? And what the GPA/GRE scores of incoming students are? If anyone went to Columbia, what kind of experience did you guys have? Would you recommend it? Was it super cut throat?

Thanks

Hello! I'm a student at Columbia just finishing up the Postbac Program. I finished my orgo/bio year in May and will be applying to medical schools this summer. The Postbac website has a ton of information about admissions, check it out. http://http://www.gs.columbia.edu/postbac/applying-postbac

I had a really great experience in the Postbac Program. It is rigorous academically, but I definitely wouldn't describe it as "cutthroat." The premedical requirements are going to be tough at any school I assume, and Columbia is no different. However, I found immediately that the students were friendly and interested in forming study groups, teachers were approachable and held regular office hours, and there was a definite community of support available. Now, finishing up this program, I have been really impressed by all the support and assistance available during this critical time of applications.

Keep in mind that this is completely anecdotal, but I've heard the program is both cutthroat and extremely difficult. I'm not trying to sway you away, but be ready to work hard.

An MD I worked with this past year in research had the same experience years ago when he did the program. He advised all my classmates against it.

Another anecdote...but only adds to the consensus that the Columbia program is competitive and cut throat.

The program is competitive. Certain people can be cut throat, but they are in the minority. There is a lot of support for those who reach out, none for those who don't. Almost anyone can get in. Don't waste your money unless you think you are at least the level of the average Columbia undergrad premed - the postbacs tend to be stronger. Physics weeds out as many people as orgo does, and bio weeds out as many as physics and orgo combined. If you get through you will be well positioned for med school.
