What kind of board scores do peds-genetics residency programs look for? What else do they look for when choosing a potential candidate? As an IMG, is it hard to get in? I heard there are only like 15 programs offering residency training in peds-genetics.
Thanks guys!

There's not really one right answer about board scores for peds genetics.
I'm one of the 7 current peds-genetics residents at CHOP (2 fifth years, a fourth year, two second years and 2 first years). I would say on average our board scores are the same as our classmates and that's what you'll find across the country (the average board score will vary according to the peds program attached.)
I'm happy to share my scores for reference: I got a 234 on step 1, 236 step 2, 236 step 3
Research is a major component of being a pediatrics-genetics candidate. About 90% of the combined residents in the country have PhDs, but it's not strictly necessary.
There are a handful of IMGs accepted to combined programs, and again, that will depend more on the peds program attached.

I either interviewed at, or know people who interviewed at every program in the country and I'm happy to answer any specific questions you have (we're a small community) Send me a PM

As one of few IMG applicants for this year combined peds-genetics, I can share some of my experience. Peds-genetics is indeed a competitive residency for IMGs as there are only a handful of programs throughout the US. Most programs only have one or maximum two spots per year but the good news is only few medical students/grads applying for this program. I can argue not more than 50 applicants per year and depending on the competitiveness of each programs, they might bring in 5-10 candidates for interview. There are no certain cut off board exam scores for IMG applicants but the general rules apply here as in other specialties. Try to get as high as you can ! For your reference, my scores for step 1 and CK are 262 and 281 respectively, and I also passed CS in my first attempt. As for research experience, I do not hold any postgraduate degree (MSc, PhD) or publish major research papers in genetics. Showing your genuine interest is more important than anything else and it can be done by having elective in genetics. For me I worked in a genetic clinic in my country for a year after finishing med school. After all, you will be trained as a clinician not a researcher although during your residency you are expected to work on your scholarly projects.

I applied to 10 programs and got only 2 interviews so it is very hard to match with that number. I should have gotten more interviews should I did genetic elective in the US. If you are still a med student, try to get one, just my two cents 🙂

I am keeping my fingers crossed for next week. I'll keep you updated with the result. Fyi, I also applied for categorical peds as back up.

I am glad to share this happy moment. I just learned that I matched today, hopefully in one of these two combined peds-genetics program.

Guys, I matched at my #1 choice which is a combined peds-genetics program. I couldn't be happier than this !!!!

Hello,

I am a Medical Graduate from India and currently I am preparing for My CK. I scored 230 on my step1 and did 2 electives in harvard in Molecular Genetics and another in Cardiology. I have also worked extensively in a research setting with several molecular Technologies, and was the lead in setting up our NGS platform and its applications. I really want to go for A combined program in Genetics with either Peds or IM. Any suggestions on what else should be on my resume or how I can improve my chances?. Also how are the chances in couples matches?.My fiancé wants to do the Peds /Genetics program and she scored a 247 in her step 1 and has a pretty much similar resume to me. I am a GC holder and am applying this year. Any help is greatly appreciated!!
