I'd LOVE to hear from students that did SLIGHTY to MODERATELY above average in medical school classes and consider themselves only SLIGHTLY to MODERATELY above average students that came back and got AT LEAST a 230 on the USMLE.

Not that I don't value a "gunner's" advice, but most "gunners" probably wouldn't have to try as hard to get a great score as an average student, for obvious reasons.

So, If you would be so kind as to share any advice you have as to what things I should study, and what kind of time schedule I should thing about, I would be GREATLY APPRECIATIVE!!!!!

I'm especially interested in what DO students did in this area, as we have an extra challenge in not really knowing what "extra" stuff to study!

So, what can I offer in return? Well, I promise to share what I'm doing with everyone and then when I get my 260, I will tell everyone EXACTLY how I did it!

It can be like an "underground" board-busters group.

Lets get some ideas going!!!

Not to argue semantics...but I think the definition of a 'gunner' is one who tries twice as hard, for a score only 10-15% better. I have always viewed the gunners not as the really smart guys that dont have to work, but as the guys who eat, sleep, drink, eat and **** medical school.

Oh, I never really thought of it that way. Good point. I have to admit though, I admire the gunners for being so focused. Sometimes I wonder if I should even be in medical school in the first place, because I have such a hard time motivating myself to get things done.

I think we all have such amazing potential to "unlock" our brains, it's too bad being so human gets in the way.

Kinda like how medical school always gets in the way of my learning medicine (true story).

I follow your drift and I agree for the most part, but in med school "only 10-15% better" is a HUGE difference. In my class the average standard deviation for tests is 6 to 7%, so an extra 10 to 15% is usually 2 SDs above the mean, or the top 2% of the class. And as far as boards, 10 to 15% may be all that separates those who hit the mean compared to those who "ace" the exam (250+ land).

For those interested in the logic of this, 10% out of 300 questions is 30. If there is a 1 to 1 correspondence between 3 digit score and # questions correct, then the difference between 215, the mean, and 245, may only in fact be 10%. (Of course, there have been debates in this forum about how the USMLE is scored and no one really knows. So this is, admittedly, speculation.)
