So I got accepted to my third choice, and got waitlisted at my first and second. The deposit fee is $1500- first $750 is due by April 4th, the second $750 is due by May 1st. Is it okay to pay the first deposit and sign the enrollment contract if I'm still planning on attending my first or second choice if I get in? Of course I contacted the school, no one picked up so I'll call tomorrow as well.

Do you know when your first and second choice will actually tell you whether or not you're in or out? If youre not sure, why not send them an e-mail about it. If they tell you that it's most likely going to be after April 4, as insurance I would go ahead and mail the deposit to your third choice school. You don't want something to happen where you don't mail a deposit and so withdraw yourself from your third choice then are not able to get off the waitlist from your first and second choice. Rationally, I would e-mail first and see and if things are still up in the air and if so mail your deposit as insurance. A third choice is still a decent option in my opinion.

Both the first and second choices said they take ppl off the waitlist til the first week of classes. By signing and sending the enrollment contract to the third choice, I'm not violating anything legal or cant get in trouble if I decide to withdraw, say during june/july/august right?

No you won't have any legality issues. The only problem stems from losing your deposit but that's why schools want you to send it in the first place, to deter you from going to other schools. They want your money!😱

I would email all three schools. Do you know where you are on the waitlist? That may give you a better idea of your chances. Ask for an extension from your 3rd school and try and get an idea of the likelihood of acceptances from your first two choices. Good Luck!

Be very careful phrasing your e-mail to your third choice school. You don't want to upset anyone's ego. Treat your e-mails to your top choice schools as a letter of intent and write them all professionally.

To the OP's question, this is why there are wait lists. Other students are doing exactly the same thing - and that's why your first & second choice schools accept people right up to the first week of school, to fill in for people switching schools. There's nothing wrong with making a deposit at the school if you are serious about attending, then switching when you're accepted to a school you prefer, as long as you're courteously being as timely as possible in notifying the school you're dropping so they can fill your spot.

Pay the first $750 and wait it out another month. That money is nothing in the grand scheme of debt you will accumulate. There is nothing wrong with paying a deposit and then withdrawing your application/acceptance later. Do not call the school you were accepted to. If you don't hear from the other two by 4/23, call them. You will then know if you should mail in the second $750.

hey everyone I'm in the same boat I got accepted to my second choice school and wait listed to my first. My questions is do you think its appropriate to send a letter of intent to the school I'm wait listed at. I keep hearing mixed reviews, I wanted to send an email with a letter of intent to my first choice school to better my chances, but do you think it maybe to much. Any tips are welcome thanks!

Depends on whether the school has a systematic ranked waiting list or a pool of students on a list.

If ranked, letter of intent probably won't help you much.

If in a pool, definitely contact a dean of admissions and let them know you're interested. Follow up with a letter of intent, if necessary. I had a friend who called a dean every two days (no sarcasm) and he was eventually accepted after the dean was tired of hearing from him.
