A question on how doing XYZ will be viewed by residencies. Sorry to be that guy.

How is serving on the Honor Code Adjudication Committee viewed? I understand serving on the Admissions Committee is pretty substantial, but I'm not sure where this falls.

Sorry if this has been asked before. My cursory search yielded results on honor code violations and joining honor societies.

Nobody cares.

As has been said on SDN millions of times, only take a medical school leadership position if it's an issue you actually care about +/- to network/schmooze with the members of your school administration. Other than that, nobody cares.

Thank you for being an honorable part of the community. Amidst the corruption of medical education that bestows us you are a shining light amongst the darkness. Unfortunately, residency PDs won't care. What will they care about you ask? Here I will make a list for you:

1) Your 3 digit Step 1 score.

That's it, that's all. Spend every waking moment of your life studying for that test.

Maybe if you'd joined fewer committees and spent more time with FA your score would be higher.

Maybe? Altho I did read that book twice and did Pathoma 4x and multiple runs thru Sketchy with Uworld and Rx. I'm just stupid I guess.

I was in exactly 0 committees. Did publish more papers than you ever will in your life tho. Not that it matters...

Re bolded: I wouldn't be so sure. You never know who you're talking to.

So you didn't do as well as you expected on Step 1. It happens. Get over it and adjust your plans accordingly. And for f's sake stop derailing threads with your whining.

As a side note, while both Step 1 and research (if you're at all serious about it) take a substantial amount of work/dedication to excel, both also involve some amount of luck, just like most things in life. And I would bet that luck is a bigger part in the research equation because how much you publish largely depends on what kind of project you have, how productive your research group is as a whole and how prolific/motivated to publish your PI is.

Residency programs will not care 1 iota. Your fellow students might think you are dweeb though. The only people I know who ever sat on the types of committees responsible for punishing students were the types that most of the class hated.

Honestly it might hurt you because if they see you as the type of person who is concerned with that type of honor code committee stuff, there's a higher probability that you are a special snowflake and would be a pain to work with as a resident

I disagree with the sentiment here that committees don't matter for anything. Clearly residencies don't weight it heavily, but I think serving on something substantial like admissions or curriculum committee (I personally do) can be a plus. It probably won't give your application more respect like a 3rd year honors or step score would, but if you have a bunch of activities that tell a story and those happen to be your interests, speaking about them at interviews could demonstrate a genuine interest which is good.

The thing about committees in my opinion is despite the bureaucratic nature of them, they end up making some substantial decisions by arbitrary means. If you can voice your opinion in a compelling manner at the right time, you may very well change the policy at your school. To me that's exciting regardless of how it makes you're application look.
