I swore I remember seeing someone on SDN who added cake making to the community activities section of VMCAS as a hobby but I can't find that thread 🙁 I already have 6 things in that section but only two are non-volunteering/non-academic related (cheerleading and piano), did any of you add things like gardening, canoeing etc. (hobbies)? I just don't want to look like I'm adding an excessive amount of things.

I personally put cooking and drawing in mine. Made a joke about preparing for club bake sales in the cooking description, too - obviously didn't kill my app! 😀

Yes.

I've put "Arts and Crafts" and "Insect Collecting."

I listed drawing and painting, film critique/review, book club, Beginning ASL instructor, and nature photographer. Not sure if all of those count, but I didn't think it could hurt. 😛

Might have been me? I don't remember what all I put, but I took Wilton cake decorating classes, and I think I put that on there. At least last year, "hobbies" were explicitly included in community activities, so it's definitely legit to include them.

Here's a related question:

Study abroads. How did you all list them?

I feel that leaving them solely in the "coursework" area doesn't really do them justice in terms of explanation of activities and purpose of the travel. For me, some don't have enough animal-ness to be "Animal Experience" and they don't perfectly fit in awards or honors... so what to do with them?

Community Activities is like the catch-all section, so, maybe describe them there?

I honestly just listed mine in coursework and talked about it in my personal statement and supplemental essays a lot. Mine wasn't at all animal related but it had a huge impact on me since I was gone for an entire year. I dealt with some serious reverse culture shock coming back (even though I was only in the UK...visited 11 countries while I was over there though) and still have days where I wish I had gone abroad for vet school.

I think it might have been you, BTW a cake decorating class sounds so fun

& thanks everyone for your input! I think I will be adding a few hobbies to my app.

@Jess Monster, I don't have experience studying abroad but IMO I think it would be appropriate to put it under community activities
