I attended community college for ~2 years and have ~3.70 GPA because I waited past the deadline to withdraw from a course I was failing (Calc II) and received an F. I've transferred to a four year university now and have ~3.96 GPA.

My question is whether my GPA would be viewed by ADCOMS as an average between all these credits (~3.78) or whether I would be viewed as having a higher GPA. Essentially, will I be placed in the "box" of applicants with lower or higher GPAs. Also, would they take into consideration that the higher GPA I earned at my university was from taking upper-level science/math courses?

Sorry if my question is somewhat vague.

Your GPA will be arranged by year on your application, so it will show that you improved. Yes your F will count towards your cumulative and sGPA. However, at a 3.78, I doubt that will get you screened out anywhere. Explain the F as best you can on your app (take responsibility for it, don't blame extrinsic factors) and I think you will be fine. Don't worry so much about what "box" you are in. MD/PhD applicants get looked at much more in depth than MD applicants.

Thank you for your response. I received the F due to immaturity and laziness at the time and forgot to withdraw out of negligence. I think I've grown since then, but I'm not sure how I would explain the F without making myself look bad. Would it be fine to claim that I was simply a lazy student/teenager at the time? There is honestly not much more of a reason.

yes...lazy stupid teenager who used it as a wake-up call and it hasn't happened since. Do none of you realize that MSTP directors were young once too?
