Hey guys,
I'm new to this board. I plan on applying to 2 optometry schools this fall (SCCO and UHCO). I attend University of Houston and in the spring I attended UHCO's "optometry day" for undergraduate students. The dean mentioned that if you have taken many classes at a community college that it could affect your acceptance into optometry school. I'm a little worried because I took 65 credit hours at a community college. My GPA at the community college was 3.58 while at U of H it was 3.36. I was just wondering if anyone here was in my situation? If so, did you have trouble getting in?

I didn't know that that was the case. I mean many people take CC classes sometimes because the classes are cheaper. Its true that CC classes are easier than University classes and that may tweak your over all GPA a little. You may want to call Houston and ask how it may affect you overall.

i know for scco they do not frown upon CC courses and in fact actually encourage it. the admissions director, dr. munroe, told this to me personally so i wouldn't hesitate to put that on their application. they encourage CC courses because they are most interactive than most UC courses (cause of the size, etc)

hope this helps

I too took over 50 hours at a community college, yet I was still accepted into UHCO.

There are many other factors that can help you. Experience, volunteer, and knowledge of the field all together.
