Hello,

I am a graduating Senior with a 2.85cgpa in the social science, with a year of research and currently working at a hospital. Being a nontraditional student, what are the odds I would be accepted taking pre-med classes at a community college and getting all A's and B's?

Any thought/suggestions are appreciated.

You will be fine if you take your prereqs at a CC.

idk ive spoke to school admins and they have directly said that if you to cc, that they would down on you as a whole.......but your in a bad situation for acceptance with a 2.9 in a social science (no upper level biology classes they would figure you cant handle the courseload)

I would say that you would be safe if you had a high GPA but with a low GPA you should probably take them at a university. You may also want to look into some retakes and some additional upper level science courses.

I don't think the OP is in a bad situation because he has a 2.9 in a non-science degree. That actually can work into his favor if he aces all of his pre-reqs. I agree that the OP should take one or two upper division courses (like biochem, cell bio, molec bio, etc) to show that he/she is capable of handling a difficult courses. Which schools have you spoken to that advise against taking CC courses?? I think that would helpful in determining whether or not the OP chooses to take courses there.

No matter how you look at it, a 2.85 cGPA is a mark against you in the schools eye, social sciences or not. Community college is another one of those marks. I took several prereqs at a CC, I had a ~3.8 cGPA and a 30+ MCAT and schools still mentioned that the CC classes were not ideal.

However, CC was my only option as I had to work around my current career. So, do what you have to do but know that it looks better from a university.

2.85 from a 4 yr and then going to make all As at a CC? ...Even if you had a 4.0, I'd wonder whether you could make it. Your GPA is in the bottom 2% of applicants as is. Anyone who sees a <3.0 jump above a 3.5 when an applicant transfers to a CC is probably going to attribute much of that change to a difference in rigor of coursework. If you had a 3.6+, I'd say it's fine to take prereqs at a CC but w/ such a low GPA, you'd be doing yourself quite a bit disservice.

Are you wanting to take classes at a CC because its easier on your wallet? I think if this is the case, then you should go ahead take the courses at a CC. Also, I would definitely contact some of the schools that you are interested in and get their opinion about it.

If you have a state university nearby, I would opt to go that route. I would avoid taking classes at a CC if possible. There are good CC's out there, and one that may be OK with ad coms in that particular location, but in general CC classes have a reputation of being easier.

I've done my research and it is completely acceptable to do your pre-reqs at a community college.

I took all but 1 pre-req at a CC and got an acceptance. Of the 2 interviews I've completed so far, nobody even mentioned the fact that I took all but 1 pre-reqs at CC.
