Hey guys,

I'm a high school senior graduating this June. I'm very interested in the medical field. I'll probably major in the liberal arts though, but I do intend on going to Medical School. Anyway, I can't decide between two pretty mediocre state schools (didn't get into the flagship-UW) or my local community college. I am an intelligent guy, but I lost interest in high school so my GPA isn't good enough to get me into the 'good' schools. I'm actually leaning towards the community college because I want to stay in my city, I don't want to go out to the rural areas to attend one of the state schools, but I am also very much worried about any potential stigma associated with my enrollment at a community college. I'd probably be accepted into the flagship state school as a junior year transfer, provided I do well which I intend to, but all my GE's will be done at the cc. I'd like to go to medical school at a very prestigious university, and I was wondering if they'd look down upon me because where I spent the first two years of my college career. Please give me any honest information you posses.

Thanks

Well, going to a CC is far from the optimal ideal, but also going to a school that you might hate and thus do badly in may be worse. At the same time going to the lower ranked state u over the higher one could be a case of large fish, small pond v.s small fish, big pond.

I would say that if it's still an option to go to one of the two state schools you mentioned that you should do so. College is what you make of it- study hard, do well, get to know your profs, network and look for cool opportunities (be it research or otherwise). Besides, my understanding is that generally med schools don't really give much of a hoot about where you go for undergrad- they care a lot more about how well you did and what you did during that time. 👍

With that said, my understanding is also that it's not the end of the world if you do have to start off at a CC and then finish the other two years/take your med school pre-reqs at the state school. I know people have done it and have gotten into vet school, I'm sure it's the same story for med school as well.
